Our chickens

Every since we have lived at The Sanctuary, we have grown fruit and vegetables. It's not quite the "Good Life" and being self-sufficient. But it does help our own children appreciate where food comes from, and to share in the delights and responsibilities.

Keeping a few hens has been a enjoyable experience, especially as "our girls" are so sociable and inquisitive. They are especially keen on looking for any tasty items when we dig over a patch of garden or do some weeding.

At the moment, we have:-

  • One Goldline called Goldie
  • One Cream Legbar (a rare breed that lays blue eggs) called Trinnie
  • Two Light Sussex called Snowdrop and Snowflake
  • Three Black Rocks hens, who are so similar, we can only tell them apart by their toe nails. Hence the names: Two Pink Toes, One Pink Toe, and No Pink Toes

Whenever possible, they are free to roam the whole of our garden. If we have visitors with dogs (who might not be so used to chickens as our own Golden Retriever) we keep the hens in a secure run, which you'll see when you first arrive.

Here is a really good website, all about The Incredible Edible Egg
